The current Z94.3 CSA Standard requires that all safety lenses (prescription and neutral) are equipped with a scratch resistant coating also refer to wrongly as “anti-scratch coating “; it is a mistake because there are currently no coatings on the market that fulfills this mandate. To this day, no material used in eyewear has the property of being “anti-scratch” because even a treated lens may get scratches. The proper term to use is “scratch resistant”. The scratch resistant is a coating that is applied to the ophthalmic lens by dipping method as a varnish which covers the lens and thus protects the abrasive particles and from daily use such as inappropriate cleaning (sees our blog on Caring for your glasses). The scratch resistant used by Securo on our prescription safety glasses is a varnish that covers both sides of the lenses and provides very good protection.
In fashion prescription eyewear, it is now odd to find a scratch resistant coating on its own; the standard is now to include an anti-glare coating. There are several types of anti-glare coating on the market that differs in quality and price. In our days, employers have more concern for their workers and will go the extra mile so the safety glasses provide a good vision and optical quality that approaches personal spectacles. The anti-glare coating allows the wearer to have a fully transparent lens with no ghost reflection of natural or artificial light on the lens. Image clarity and contrast are then improved. For example, an anti-glare coating applied to High Definition lenses will provide optimal vision. The new generation of anti-reflective coating has an additional coating over standard anti-glare. The lenses are very smooth and have antifouling, oleophobic (pushing the fats) and antistatic properties; they don’t dirty easily and are much easier to clean. If the frequency of cleaning is reduced, the lifetime of the lenses is extended.
It is important for companies to identify their needs carefully, in some cases of extreme heat or heavy dust, the anti-reflective coating is not recommended.
